How to Change the Battery in a Nissan Key Fob

If you find it’s time to change the battery in your Nissan key fob so you can get back to remote starting your car and locking the doors from a distance, know that it’s a quick and easy process. If you’d rather someone at our service center help, come in, or talk with someone from the parts department to see about getting a replacement key fob if needed. We at Bill Kay Nissan can help you get that new battery in and have your key working again in no time at all so you can get back on the Woodridge roads.

Instructions on Changing a Nissan Key Fob Battery

  1. Release and remove the key from the back of the key fob where the key ring is located. The metal key should come out once you slide the switch.
  2. Open the key fob. There’s a small opening where the spare key you just removed was. Use a flathead screwdriver to pop open both halves of the key fob.
  3. Remove the battery, but be careful of the rubber ring underneath it.
  4. Put in the new battery with the positive (+) sign facing down. Most need a 3V battery, but some take a CR2025 battery. If you’re unsure which to use, you can always turn to your owner’s manual or contact us at Bill Kay Nissan.
  5. Pop the two halves of the key fob back in place and be sure to put the spare key back in its spot.
  6. Finally, test out the key fob. If it’s still not working, double check the battery was placed in the right way and that every piece is aligned. Want someone to take a look? Visit your trusted local Nissan service center for some assistance.

In the meantime, if you need to start the vehicle with the dead key fob, simply take out the key mentioned above, insert the key into the driver’s side door, and unlock it. You’ll be able to use the key as a backup until you can get your key fob working again.
